Does Zerodha Have AI Trading? What’s Actually Possible in 2026

Short answer: Zerodha has no AI trading product. No AI places trades for you. No algo runs without a person watching. No robo-advisor manages your money. But that is not the whole story. Since May 2025, Zerodha's official Kite MCP has let AI assistants read your live account and draft GTT orders for your approval. Here is what is genuinely possible today, and what SEBI and Zerodha do not allow.

What Zerodha actually offers

Zerodha has made this choice on purpose. Its official Kite MCP server (mcp.kite.trade) exposes roughly 22 tools, and most only read data: profile, margins, holdings, positions, mutual-fund holdings, live quotes, OHLC, historical candles, instrument search, and order and trade history. It also exposes GTT conditional-order tools. Two things are missing on purpose: market-order placement and fully automatic execution. GTT orders — stop-loss and target levels that live on Zerodha's servers — are the allowed middle path.

Why the guardrails exist

Two reasons. Both are rules, not careful marketing:

  • SEBI regulation. SEBI's algo rules require retail algo execution to come from whitelisted static IPs, under the broker's algo-registration framework. An AI assistant on a consumer plan cannot meet that. Zerodha's own hosted MCP leaves out order placement completely.
  • Liability. An AI that misreads a prompt and sells your entire portfolio at market open would create legal trouble. Approval-gated GTT keeps a human approving every single order.

The result: if a product claims "AI trading on Zerodha," it either uses the Kite Connect API with its own algo registration (enterprise territory), or it is exaggerating.

What AI can genuinely do on your account today

  1. Portfolio analysis in seconds. Concentration flags, top-weight bars, unrealised P&L, cash position — computed live from your holdings, not from an old spreadsheet.
  2. Risk review with a specific lens. Ask the same question as a risk manager, a growth investor or a tax planner, and get three different, useful answers.
  3. Tax-loss harvesting radar. Find your loss-makers before March and decide which losses to harvest. Keep in mind that purchase dates in the AI's data may not reflect corporate actions. So check STCG/LTCG in Kite itself.
  4. GTT protective exits. The AI drafts stop-loss and ladder exits for your actual positions. You review and approve. Your downside automation takes minutes, not click-by-click work across twenty screens.
  5. A trade journal that writes itself. Today's fills, per-symbol round-trips, win rate and realised P&L — written up for you.

The 2-minute no-setup route

The official route is Claude Desktop or Cursor with npx mcp-remote https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp. It works. But it assumes you are comfortable editing JSON config files and running Node on your machine. It also breaks in common ways: Node older than 18, curly quotes pasted into the config, and the daily "session not found" reset.

KitePilot wraps the same official Kite MCP in a browser UI. Connect once. The AI agent then reads your live account with read-only access and drafts GTT plans behind an approval dialog. It never sees your credentials — login and 2FA happen on Zerodha's own pages. Connect your account here, or see the full setup guide.

The bottom line

"AI trading on Zerodha" does not exist — and should not, yet. "AI as your portfolio analyst, with GTT as the only execution path" exists right now. It is free and genuinely useful. Treat any AI output as analysis, not advice. Keep a human approving every order. And let automation handle the parts of trading that are purely mechanical.

Quick answers

Is Zerodha's AI free? Kite MCP is free. KitePilot is free. Bring your own AI key (the Gemini free tier works) or use the shared one.
Can AI place intraday orders for me? No — on the official MCP, order tools are limited to GTT, and every draft needs your approval in the UI.
Is my password safe? Login and 2FA happen on Zerodha's own pages. The AI tool only holds a read-scoped session you can revoke anytime.
