Kite MCP guide · 2026

How to connect Zerodha to AI, without the software project.

Zerodha’s official Kite MCP lets AI assistants read your live portfolio. This guide covers what it is, the official setup route, every fix for the infamous “MCP error -32603: session not found”, and the 2-minute no-setup route.

What is Kite MCP?

Kite MCP is Zerodha’s hosted Model Context Protocol server, a secure, read-only bridge between your Zerodha account and AI assistants. It is completely free, needs no Kite Connect API key, and runs at:

https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp

Two limits matter: access is read-only (the AI can see your portfolio, positions, margins and live quotes), and order placement is limited to GTT conditional orders, never market orders. Login always happens on Zerodha’s own 2FA page, so your password never passes through any third-party server.

The official route: Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code

  1. Install the latest Node.js LTS (older versions break mcp-remote).
  2. Edit your client’s config file (e.g. claude_desktop_config.json) and add npx mcp-remote https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp as the server command. Use straight quotes: one curly quote breaks the whole file.
  3. Restart the client, approve the connection, and complete the Kite 2FA login in the browser window that opens.
  4. Start asking about your holdings, margins or positions.

Works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code (Copilot Chat), Windsurf and Claude CLI. ChatGPT support is not available yet. Expect 30–60 minutes of setup and debugging the first time, and re-login loops when the session drops. Claude’s free plan also hits context-length limits quickly on large portfolios.

Fixing “MCP error -32603: session not found”

This is the most common Kite MCP failure. It means the AI client lost its session. The usual causes and fixes:

  • Daily expiry: Zerodha resets all Kite MCP sessions around 6 AM IST; re-initialize and log in again.
  • Client restarts: every fresh MCP session requires a fresh Kite login; half-initialized sessions die immediately.
  • http:// vs https:// in the server URL, or outdated Node.js breaking mcp-remote.
  • Re-login loops on every tool call: the client is creating a new session per request instead of reusing it; KitePilot avoids this entirely by keeping the session alive server-side and reconnecting in one click.

Does Zerodha have AI trading?

No, and Zerodha is explicit about it. The company has said it does not do algorithmic trading or offer financial advice, and it has deliberately held back AI-driven order placement. What Zerodha ships for AI is Kite MCP: a read-only portfolio bridge with GTT as the only order type. KitePilot follows that same philosophy: analysis first, and GTT drafts that go out only when you approve the exact details.
