Zerodha AI: What It Is, What’s Real, and What’s Hype

Search interest in "Zerodha AI" exploded after Zerodha shipped Kite MCP in May 2025. But there is no product called Zerodha AI — no robo-advisor, no auto-trading bot. What exists is more useful: an official, free way to connect AI assistants to your live Zerodha account, safely. Here is the plain-English map — what actually exists, what SEBI and Zerodha rule out, and the two-minute free way to use it.

What 'Zerodha AI' actually is

Type "Zerodha AI" into a search bar and you will find videos and hot takes — but no product of that name. Zerodha does not sell an AI assistant, a robo-advisor or an auto-trading bot. What Zerodha does offer, since May 2025, is Kite MCP: a free, official server that lets AI assistants like Claude or Cursor securely read your live account and draft GTT orders for your approval. That standard is the real thing behind every one of these searches. We explain how it works in our Kite MCP guide, and if you are wondering whether the older developer API still costs money, see Is the Zerodha API free now?

What Zerodha AI can do today

  1. Portfolio analysis in seconds. Concentration flags, unrealised P&L and your cash position, computed live from your actual holdings — not from an old spreadsheet.
  2. Risk reviews through different lenses. Ask the same question as a risk manager, a growth investor or a tax planner, and get three distinct, useful answers.
  3. Live market data. Quotes, OHLC snapshots, historical candles and instrument search, pulled live rather than from the model's memory.
  4. A trade journal that writes itself. Summaries of your trade history — fills, round-trips, win rate — without copy-pasting anything.
  5. GTT protective exits, drafted for approval. The AI proposes stop-loss and target levels for your actual positions; you review and approve before anything is placed.

What Zerodha AI cannot do

  • No market or intraday orders placed by AI.
  • No strategies running unattended while you sleep.
  • No money management on your behalf.
  • No regulated investment advice.

This is deliberate, not a missing feature. SEBI's algo framework requires retail algo execution to come from whitelisted static IPs under a broker's registration — a consumer AI assistant cannot meet that bar. Zerodha leaves market-order tools out of its hosted MCP entirely, so there is nothing to misuse. Treat it as a feature: a human approves every order.

Which AI assistants work with Zerodha

The officially supported assistants are Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code with Copilot Chat, Windsurf and the Claude CLI. They connect through one command: npx mcp-remote https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp. ChatGPT is not supported yet. The DIY route works, but it has two common failure modes: Node older than version 18 breaks mcp-remote, and curly quotes pasted into the JSON config file cause silent errors. Sessions also reset daily at around 6 AM IST — by design, so the login flow is redone each morning.

Is Zerodha AI safe?

The security model is the same whether you connect through a terminal or KitePilot. You never hand your password to an AI tool:

  • Login and 2FA happen on Zerodha's own pages — your credentials never reach the AI tool's servers.
  • Access scope is read-only, plus GTT drafting. Nothing else.
  • Every GTT draft requires your explicit approval before it is placed.
  • You can revoke access anytime by disconnecting the session.

One honest caveat: AI output is analysis, not advice. It can misread context or miss a corporate action. Verify anything important in Kite itself before you act.

The two-minute way to use it

KitePilot runs the same official Kite MCP in your browser — no Node.js, no config files, no terminal. Connect your Zerodha account free, approve the login on Zerodha's own pages, and you are in.

Right away you get a portfolio health score, concentration flags, GTT protective-exit coverage, and a chat agent that answers questions over your live data. When the daily reset hits around 6 AM IST, reconnecting takes one click.

The bottom line

Zerodha AI, as it exists today, is an AI analyst over your real account — it reads data, runs analysis and drafts GTT exits, with your approval as the only execution gate. It is free, official and genuinely useful. Anything promising fully automatic trading on Zerodha is hype; walk away.

Quick answers

Is Zerodha AI free? Yes. Zerodha's Kite MCP server is free, and KitePilot wraps it in a free browser interface. You may need your own AI key; free tiers of Gemini or OpenRouter work.
Does Zerodha have an AI chatbot in Kite? No. The AI part comes from assistants you connect — Kite MCP is the bridge between them.
Can Zerodha AI place trades? Only GTT drafts that you approve. It never places market or intraday orders.
