How to Link Your Zerodha Account to AI — 3 Real Ways

You can link your Zerodha account to an AI assistant three ways today, and one of them needs zero installation. All three run through Zerodha's official Kite MCP, the same published server — and none of them ever sees your password, because login and two-factor authentication happen on Zerodha's own pages. Here is each route, step by step, with the mistakes that commonly break the link.

The three ways, at a glance

All three use Zerodha's official Kite MCP server. The only difference is where you talk to the AI and how much you install.

  • Way 1 — KitePilot. Browser-based, no setup, about two minutes end to end.
  • Way 2 — Claude Desktop + Kite MCP. Zerodha's official client route; needs Node.js 18+ and a one-time JSON config edit.
  • Way 3 — Cursor, VS Code or Windsurf. The same official MCP, wired into the editor you already use.

Way 1: KitePilot — no setup, works in your browser

KitePilot is a free browser-based assistant built on Zerodha's official Kite MCP — no Node.js, no config files, no API fees.

  1. Open KitePilot in your browser.
  2. Click Connect. KitePilot opens a fresh session with Zerodha's official MCP server.
  3. Log in and complete 2FA on Zerodha's own page — your credentials never touch KitePilot's servers.
  4. Come back and start asking your portfolio questions.

Access is read-only, and the only order action is GTT drafts that need your explicit approval. Total time: about two minutes. Wondering about costs? Kite MCP is free — Kite Connect vs Kite MCP pricing compares it with the older developer API.

Way 2: Claude Desktop with the official Kite MCP

This is Zerodha's own published route for desktop clients: register the Kite MCP server in Claude Desktop through the mcp-remote bridge. It needs one install and one config edit.

  1. Install Node.js — version 18 or newer, ideally the latest LTS. Older versions break mcp-remote.
  2. Edit claude_desktop_config.json and add the command npx mcp-remote https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp.
  3. Restart Claude Desktop and approve the MCP connection.
  4. Complete the login on Zerodha's 2FA page, then start asking.

Three things trip people up. Use straight quotes in the JSON config — curly quotes copied from a blog silently break it. Keep Node.js at 18 or newer. And sessions reset daily around 6 AM IST, so you redo the login link the next morning: "MCP error -32603: session not found" means exactly that. Claude's free-plan message and context limits can also choke on large portfolios.

Way 3: Cursor, VS Code or Windsurf

The same npx mcp-remote https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp command goes into Cursor, VS Code (Copilot Chat) or Windsurf's MCP settings instead of Claude's config file. Capabilities are identical — this route simply suits you if you already live in an editor all day.

What you can ask once linked

  • "How concentrated is my portfolio, and what are my top weights?"
  • "What is Reliance trading at, and where did it open today?"
  • "Draft a GTT stop-loss for my largest holding."
  • "Summarise today's trades and my win rate."
  • "Review my portfolio before results season."

Common mistakes that break the link

  • http:// instead of https:// in the MCP URL — the server only answers on https.
  • Curly quotes pasted from a blog into the JSON config. Use straight quotes only.
  • Node.js older than 18 — mcp-remote fails to run on it.
  • Expecting ChatGPT to work. It does not support Kite MCP yet — Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and Claude CLI do.
  • Forgetting the daily reset. Sessions expire around 6 AM IST; a "session not found" error the next morning is expected, not a bug.
If you would rather skip config files entirely, KitePilot does the setup for you — Connect your account in about two minutes.

Quick answers

Can I link Zerodha to ChatGPT? No — not yet. ChatGPT does not support Kite MCP; Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and Claude CLI all work.
Is linking Zerodha to AI safe? Login and 2FA happen on Zerodha's own pages, the assistant gets read-only access, and you can revoke access anytime.
Does it cost anything? Kite MCP is free from Zerodha, and KitePilot is free — no API fees on either route.
